All the First-Time Acting Nominees at the 2024 Oscars, from America Ferrera to Sterling K. Brown

The 2024 Oscar nominations are out, and first-time nominees are dominating in the acting categories.

Emily Blunt and Jeffrey Wright are among the Hollywood veterans getting their long-awaited recognition, and decorated TV stars like Sterling K. Brown and America Ferrera could nab some of the biggest award in film. Meanwhile, Lily Gladstone already made history as the first Native American actress with an Academy nod.

As the entertainment industry waits to see which talents win big on Oscar night, take a look at the new names up for consideration at the 96th annual Academy Awards, which air Sunday, March 10, at 7 p.m. ET on ABC.

The Emmy-winning Ugly Betty star had yet to break onto the Oscars ballot until her show-stopping performance as Gloria in Barbie. America Ferrera’s feminist monologue in the film continues to be praised as one of the most moving cinematic moments of the year, earning Ferrera her first Academy nod for Best Supporting Actress.

Cillian Murphy’s performance as the titular physicist in Oppenheimer already secured him a Golden Globe at the start of awards season. Murphy is in the majority as a first-time Oscar candidate in the Best Actor category; of the five nominees, only Bradley Cooper and Paul Giamatti have earned previous nods from the Academy.

If Rustin star Colman Domingo wins for Best Actor, he’ll be the first openly gay Black man to take home an acting Oscar.

“I recognize that I’m having a moment,” Domingo told PEOPLE just a few weeks before nominations were announced.

04

Danielle Brooks’ performance as Sofia in The Color Purple on Broadway earned her a Tony nomination in 2017. Nearly seven years later, Brooks adapted the same role for big screens and earned her inaugural nod from the Academy.

This year’s Best Supporting Actress category is also stacked with fresh names, with Jodie Foster as the only veteran Oscar nominee (she’s also a two-time winner).
