Kelly Stafford’s journey to Super Bowl 2022 didn’t go as smoothly as it did for her husband, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.
On a recent episode of her podcast, “The Morning After,” Kelly recalled feeling “miserable” and weighing nearly 90 pounds during the 2021-22 season — when Stafford led the Rams to a 23-20 win against the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI on Feb. 13.
“I felt like I was so nervous that Super Bowl year [2022] for Matthew. Every game I couldn’t hold anything down,” Kelly said while emphasizing there was elevated pressure and expectations that season. “I was miserable. I was miserable. I think I weighed 90 pounds.”
Kelly was explaining that certain NFL seasons have felt more relaxing than others while speaking with Emily Mayfield, wife of Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, who was a guest on her podcast.
“What a whirlwind that must’ve been for you,” Emily said, to which Kelly replied, “Looking back, it was just very blurry.” In his first season with the Rams, Stafford led his new team to a win against the Bengals in Super Bowl 2022, which came down to the final minutes at SoFi Stadium.
The veteran signal-caller — who spent 12 seasons with the Lions before being traded to Los Angeles in Jan. 2021 — led the Rams on a go-ahead scoring drive to give them a 23-20 lead with less than two minutes remaining. At the time, Kelly discussed feeling sick on the day of the Super Bowl.
“I threw up twice,” Kelly said on her podcast the day after Stafford won his first Super Bowl. “I kept it together though for the most part.”
